Plot summary
In a Dark Ages Europe torn by endless war, warlords hunt for a blacksmith whose blades are stronger than any others, forged with a mystical element. Zhadoba, a former druid chieftain, learns who the smith is and where he lives. Greed hardens him, and his forces wipe out the Clan of the Grey Hounds, seizing the blacksmith's weapons. The smith's fair-haired son witnesses the massacre and bites Zhadoba's tattooed hand. Zhadoba spares the boy and sends him to labor in the mines of the Crystal Mountains. There he endures years of brutal work, his only companions fellow slaves and a clever bat, Ragged Wing. He grows strong and escapes with weapons made by his father's secret craft. A wanderer now, he calls himself Wolfhound, a warrior and a weapon maker as skilled as his father.
