Plot summary
Beneath the Moscow River, water is leaking into a metro tunnel near Park Kultury station, and the night crawler Sergeitch cannot get anyone to take his warning seriously. Above ground, Irina is divided between her husband, the surgeon Andrei Garin, and her lover, the businessman Vladislav Konstantinov, who presses her to leave Andrei. After a night with Konstantinov she does not go home, so Andrei takes their daughter Ksenia to the Garden station, where Konstantinov also turns up, hurrying to work. Sergeitch, drinking nearby with Galina, remembers the slime smell of the water he saw; police detain the two of them and Galina slips away into the subway. Then the river pours through the tunnel ceiling and floods the line, and the train derails.
