Plot summary
Earth is sending missions to explore Mars in 2032. An expedition to the planet digs up a mysterious egg and brings it aboard its ship, the SC-37, where it hatches; a crystal and a slimy creature come out, and the astronauts study both. Two months on, the station L-5 intercepts the SC-37, and a failing neutron reactor destroys the station. A repair crew of five gets away on the crippled ship and must cooperate despite their differences. With too few supplies to reach Earth or wait for a rescue, they plan a stop at supply stations. The creature is hiding in the engine room.

- Director Lance Lindsay called Star Crystal "the worst nightmare I've ever gone through": Eric Woster had to edit the film himself after the Newport Beach investors refused to put in more money, a leading man's severe fever cost seven of the twelve shooting days, and one actor refused to return to the set.
- The space station was jerry-rigged by Lewis Abernathy out of a Sparkletts water bottle and a piece of PVC pipe, after the storyboards' elaborate bicycle-wheel design proved impractical to film, and he persuaded a friend to detail the model for $200.
- The alien creature was built by Woster in his own bedroom, using BFGoodrich material and condoms for its irises, and its 27 separate head movements required 14 operators to work.

Eric Woster, a devout Christian, wrote Christian doctrine into the story: the creature's change of heart comes after it takes over the ship's computers and is exposed to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.- Lewis Abernathy said the effects in Star Crystal cost about $5,000, while Eric Woster contradicted him and put the figure at $10,000.
