Plot summary
Dawn Wetherby is fifteen and lives in a small town with an alcoholic mother and two younger brothers. When her mother humiliates her at a school dance, Dawn runs away to Hollywood, arriving with little money and no way to find work at her age. A diner cheats her out of a dollar and a mugger takes what is left; Frankie Lee, a streetwise young prostitute, helps her get her money back. A cough sends Dawn to a clinic, where Alexander Duncan introduces himself and offers her a room in his apartment, asking nothing in return. Following him one night, she learns he works as a male prostitute and says nothing about it.
