Plot summary
Diane and Kate York have relied on each other since Kate's father walked out when she was small. Kate waits tables for a caterer, and Diane lives by herself in the big house where Kate grew up, editing from home; Kate believes her mother would be better off with a man. At an event Kate meets Bruce Wright, who is helping a couple whose car has broken down, finds him interesting, and passes along Diane's number. Six weeks on, Diane mentions a mystery businessman she has been seeing. Bruce arrives at her house while Kate is there doing laundry, and Kate realizes he is the man courting Diane. Stepping out for a moment, she returns for her laundry and sees him propose. She shares champagne with the newly engaged pair, unhappy about it.
