Plot summary
In 1998 Miami, Sedrick signs up for chess as an easy elective and finds himself in Mario Martinez's class, known to the students as Mr. T. There he meets Ito, who works long hours after school to help his single mother, the class clown Roddy, and Gil. Principal Kestel sees the chess club as little more than a detention hall and threatens to move its funding to the football team, then offers the boys a chance to raise money by selling candy bars. Mr. T spends his own savings to register the team for the regional tournament, and the boys win their way to the state championship. Ito loses his job for leaving town with the team, and the rest of the group needs money and a qualifying player to enter the state event.
