Plot summary
Rachel Chu teaches economics in New York. Her boyfriend, Nick Young, invites her to Singapore for the wedding of his closest friend, Colin Khoo, and to meet his relatives. On the plane they sit in first class, and Nick admits that his family is rich, saying the seats are one of the perks of that wealth. Rachel had assumed they might be poor. Her former college roommate, Peik Lin Goh, tells her that the Youngs are the region's biggest real estate developers.

- One early producer wanted to cast a Caucasian actress as heroine Rachel Chu, so author Kevin Kwan optioned the film rights for just $1 in exchange for a continuing role in creative and development decisions.
- Constance Wu initially could not take the role of Rachel because of her work on Fresh Off the Boat, so she wrote to director Jon M. Chu about her connection to the character and convinced him to push back production by four months.
- The ancestral Young family home was filmed at two abandoned mansions, Carcosa Seri Negara, that were dilapidated and, as found in 2017, filled with monkey feces.
- The stuffed tiger in the Young mansion foyer was a fake made from foam and fur in Thailand, and customs inspectors delayed its shipment because they thought it was a real taxidermied animal.
- Singapore Airlines declined to take part in exchange for product placement because it was not sure the movie would represent the airline and its customers in a good light, so the fictional Pacific Asean Airlines was created for the film.
- The day before filming Nick's second proposal to Rachel, Jon M. Chu decided the planned static side-by-side conversation had the wrong energy and changed it to a walk-and-talk improvised on the spot.
- Michelle Yeoh helped shape the film's final wardrobe choices through her friendships with wealthy Singaporean and Hong Kong tai tais, and she loaned jewelry from her own collection, including the distinctive emerald engagement ring.
- Ke Huy Quan, who had quit acting after Second Time Around in 2002 because of the lack of opportunities for Asian actors, said the positive representation of Asians in Crazy Rich Asians inspired him to return to the profession.
