Plot summary
Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, Shane Fuller and David Thomson are officers in Albany, Georgia. On duty they are steady and assured; raising children is where they feel least able. Mitchell cares deeply for his daughter Emily, who is nine, yet stays at a remove from Dylan, his fifteen-year-old son, since the boy's interest in 5k runs does not match his own. Hayes, new to the station, grew up without his biological father and gives Father's Day cards to a neighbor he regards as one; his teenage daughter Jade resents the strict rule he keeps about dating. Fuller is divorced and shares custody of his son. Javier Martinez, an immigrant construction worker laid off when his company went over budget, looks for work, and Mitchell calls on him by mistake, thinking he is a different Javier.

- Courageous beat out all three Hollywood movies that opened on the same weekend: 50/50, What's Your Number? and Dream House, which were produced with budgets of $8 million, $20 million and $50 million respectively.
- The actors in Courageous were volunteers, and the film would likely have cost several times more if professional assistance had been used. Director Kendrick said: "With volunteers no one is watching the clock and we're all in it together."
- The Duggar family from TLC's 19 Kids and Counting were extras during a father-son 5K race, with Jim Bob Duggar and seven of his ten sons joining hundreds of other fathers and sons; their involvement was shown on their own series in "Duggars go Hollywood".
- In December 2010 the Motion Picture Association of America rated the film PG-13 for "some violence and drug content". That rating was surrendered a few days later but was later reinstated, and Courageous is the first Sherwood Pictures film to receive one.
