Plot summary
Katya Livingston is a 28-year-old ad sales executive in San Francisco who cares more about being a well-known socialite than about being a good person. Her accountant, headed to prison, advises her to keep a journal of her expenses, since an audit is likely. She wears designer knock-offs, chases entry to the hottest clubs, and spends much of her time with her friends Eliza, Ferguson and Frangiapani. Then she learns of the Royal Ball, the season's biggest social event, a benefit for Youth Aid International thrown by the socialite sisters Dove and Fawn Greenstein. Katya is not invited, after an indiscretion with Dove's husband on the couple's wedding day and after she told a local tabloid Dove's real age. She is desperate to attend, all the more so because her friends are going.
