Plot summary
Gloria writes articles but has no steady work and drinks heavily, and Tim, her boyfriend, ends their relationship and puts her out of their shared New York City apartment. She moves into the nearly empty house she grew up in, in Mainhead, New Hampshire, and reunites with Oscar, a childhood friend who now runs the bar his father left him. Oscar gives her a job there, and she drinks with him, Garth and Joel until morning. In Seoul, a giant reptile appears and causes damage. Gloria works out that she is responsible whenever she crosses a playground in her town at 8:05 in the morning, and that she controls what the creature does.

- Before filming began on Colossal, Japanese company Toho sued Voltage Pictures, the film's producers, over the unauthorized use of Godzilla's image and stills from earlier Godzilla films in emails and press documents sent to potential investors; a settlement was reached that October.
- Anne Hathaway was the first actress to sign on to Colossal, at a time when the project had no financial backing. She was sent the script after director Jonathan Demme screened A Field in England for her and she asked her representation for a similar script she could join.
- No motion capture was used to create Colossal's monster: footage of Anne Hathaway acting out her part was given to the CG team as reference points. The CG artists, rather than director Nacho Vigalondo, were responsible for the monster's look.
