Plot summary
Paul, an actor, becomes so immersed in his roles that he struggles to separate their emotions from his own. While preparing to play Uncle Vanya on Broadway, he reads about Soul Storage, a clinic that physically removes and stores a person's soul. His agent tells him about the office. Paul visits and learns that most extracted souls appear as gray matter or clouds. He declines to watch his own extraction, then discovers his soul looks like a chickpea. He stores it and returns home with a small residue of his soul, enough for affection toward his wife Claire and his hobbies but not for deep feeling about new things. At first the procedure leaves him feeling more relaxed.

- Director Sophie Barthes got the idea from a dream in which she was one of several patients at a futuristic doctor's office, where an office assistant explained that their boxes carried their extracted souls; she woke before seeing her own, but did see the contents of Woody Allen's box, and that moment became the inspiration for Paul Giamatti's character.
- When Barthes approached Giamatti at the Nantucket Film Festival and pitched him on the film idea, he was ready to sign up on the spot.
