Plot summary
Ann Dane wakes her husband Richard when a window breaks in their Laborde, Texas, home in 1989. Richard shoots the intruder, a wanted felon named Freddy Russel, and is told the killing was self-defense. Shaken, he goes to Freddy's burial, where the dead man's father, Ben Russel, a paroled convict, confronts him in his car and mentions Richard's son, Jordan. Richard collects Jordan from school and arranges to meet Ann at the police station, but the police say Ben has broken no law and cannot give the family protection. Officers post a guard at the house only after the Danes come home to a broken front door.
