Plot summary
Mouse is 14 and lives in Baltimore with his mother and younger sister. Motorbikes are central to Baltimore's culture, and once a week each summer The Ride brings riders out to do stunts in the streets. His mother forbids him to go, because his older brother Stro died at 17 in a biking accident, but Mouse slips out with Lamont and Sweartagawd. He buys a beat-up four-wheeler and is picked up by Detective Rivers, who has known him for years through a school outreach program and tells him to stay out of trouble. At The Ride, Mouse crashes, then watches the Midnight Clique lead police on a chase and escape. Among them is Blax, a local legend just out of prison, who knew Stro and offers Mouse a box of scraps to build a bike.
