Plot summary
A court sends Leroy Lowe, grand dragon of the Texas Ku Klux Klan, to a prison work farm to serve three years of hard labor. His Klan comrades have deserted him. Warden Merville means to rehabilitate him and picks his cellmate: Emilio, a Hispanic field worker jailed for his part in a labor rights fight. Emilio is talkative, and the cramped cell leaves Leroy no room to get away from him. At the warden's weekly rehabilitation sessions the talk is farm work and crops. Then Madalena, a Mexican maid hired to clean the warden's office, arrives, and those meetings take on a different meaning for Leroy.
