Plot summary
Lynsey serves in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Afghanistan, where an IED leaves her with a traumatic brain injury. She works through physical therapy with Sharon, a caretaker, and regains her motor skills, but the treatment costs more than she can pay, so she returns to New Orleans. She lives with her mother, Gloria, in her childhood home and takes a job cleaning pools. When the truck that belonged to her brother breaks down, James, an auto mechanic, helps her repair it. She tells her doctor that she means to return to duty. Lynsey and James begin an unlikely friendship.

- In April 2021, following allegations of abuse, Scott Rudin stepped back as a producer from Causeway, which had restarted production in March 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it once more and it was completed in summer 2021.
- The shoot began in summer 2019 in New Orleans but was delayed by Hurricane Barry; it restarted in March 2020 and was delayed again by the COVID-19 pandemic before finishing in summer 2021.
