Plot summary
Dr. Cas Pepper, a 61-year-old Winnipeg doctor who keeps to himself, has just learned he is terminally ill. Dylan Morgan is 22, an aspiring writer, and she lives with her boyfriend Bobby, whose behavior is unstable. They meet in the hospital ward, where Dylan has come looking for material, and Cas agrees to give her a short lift to her home. Bobby jumps in front of the car and points a rifle at them, so Cas drives away, afraid the law will treat him as a fugitive. He had planned the trip west alone, to his vacation home on the coast, and Dylan knows nothing of his reasons. She is heading to Vancouver to meet a publisher. Getting rid of her proves harder than he expects.
