Plot summary
Ashley Smith is a single mother in Atlanta who is recovering from methamphetamine addiction. Brian Nichols is on trial for rape. On March 11, 2005, he escapes from the Fulton County courthouse, shooting the judge in his case, Rowland Barnes, court reporter Julie Brandau and Sergeant Hoyt Teasley as he gets away, and later killing off-duty ICE Special Agent David G. Wilhelm at his home. A citywide manhunt follows. His flight brings him to Smith's apartment, where he holds her hostage. To get through the time, she reads aloud to him from Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life, and Nichols, searching for redemption, listens.

- The film departs from the real case: it shows Brian Nichols shooting Judge Barnes from the front, when in reality Nichols entered the courtroom from behind and shot him in the back, and it shows Deputy Teasley killed inside the courthouse when Nichols actually killed him after he ran outside, shooting him five times rather than twice.
