Plot summary
Brianna Cartwright directs an art gallery in Chicago, and her boyfriend, Anthony McCoy, is a visual artist searching for a subject. Her brother Troy and his boyfriend tell them about Helen Lyle, blamed for a killing spree at Cabrini-Green years earlier, and Anthony visits the projects. A bee stings his hand there, and he meets William Burke, a laundromat owner who as a boy saw police beat Sherman Fields to death in 1977. William tells him the Candyman legend, which Anthony repeats for Brianna as a joke before making it the subject of a new piece called "Say My Name" for a gallery show.

- Nia DaCosta became the first Black female director to have a film finish number one at the box office, doing so with Candyman.
- After the success of Freddy vs. Jason (2003), a crossover between the Candyman and Leprechaun series titled Candyman vs. Leprechaun entered development. Tony Todd rejected it after being presented the script, saying he would never be involved in something like that.
- The shadow-puppet animation sequences were created by Chicago-based puppet theater company Manual Cinema. Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele chose shadow puppetry over a traditional flashback scene, wanting the film to stand on its own.
- Candyman became the first feature film to shoot on location inside the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Scenes were also shot in the last standing remains of Cabrini-Green Homes' fenced-off row houses from 1942.
- Composer Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe built the score around voice and extended modular synthesis, then layered field recordings of Cabrini Green over the main instruments to capture the essence and spirit of the neighborhood.
