Alla Nazimova
Biography
Alla Nazimova was a Russian-born American actress who trained with Konstantin Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theater and went on to bring modern acting techniques to American stages. Born in Yalta, she became a star in Moscow and Saint Petersburg before settling in New York, where she made her Broadway debut in 1906 and won notice in plays by Ibsen and Chekhov, including the title role in Hedda Gabler. Her silent film debut came in 1916 with War Brides, and she soon moved to Hollywood. Running her own production company, she produced, directed, edited and designed her films, among them Camille (1921) and Salomé (1923), an Oscar Wilde adaptation that failed at the time but was later placed in the National Film Registry. She acted on Broadway again in 1930 and returned to the screen in the early 1940s in Blood and Sand (1941). Her film work was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
