Plot summary
Jerry and Ted are part of a New York social set. Her choice of Ted over Paul sends Paul to his car drunk, and the crash he causes leaves Dorothy's face disfigured, so he marries her out of guilt. Three years into the marriage, on the couple's anniversary, Jerry learns that Ted has had a brief affair, which he shrugs off as meaningless. Ted is away on business when Jerry spends a night with his friend Don. When he returns she tells him she has balanced their accounts, and refuses to name the man. Ted rages, the argument ends with him walking out, and the pair file for divorce.

- MGM production head Irving Thalberg bought the rights to Ex-Wife with Joan Crawford as his original choice for Jerry, while his wife Norma Shearer was thought to lack the sex appeal for the part. Shearer won the role only after a photo session with portrait photographer George Hurrell changed Thalberg's mind.
