Plot summary
In 1930s New York City, Bobby Dorfman is the youngest son of a Jewish family. His sister Evelyn is a married school teacher and his brother Ben is a gangster. Bobby is unhappy working for his father, a jeweler, so he moves to Hollywood and takes work running errands for his uncle Phil, a talent agent. Phil asks his secretary Veronica, known as Vonnie, to help Bobby settle into Hollywood. Bobby is drawn to her unpretentiousness and falls in love with her.
