Plot summary
A young rabbit sketches a simple, childlike plan for her dream burrow on lined paper. When she starts digging, a mole and a field mouse eagerly offer help, showing elaborate blueprints of their own homes. Embarrassed by her simple drawing, she hides it, pretends she has somewhere else to be, and frantically digs deeper to escape. Her digging repeatedly bursts into neighbors' underground homes: a frog library, a hedgehog bakery where she is offered muffins, a newt bath where she is offered towels, and a beetle party. Though none of the neighbors mind, each accident makes her more embarrassed. She keeps digging until she reaches the bedrock, hoping to be alone.
