Plot summary
Kris is fourteen and lives in Houston with her grandmother and her younger sister. Her mother, Janis, is in prison. One night Kris enters the home of a neighbor, Abe, to take alcohol and painkillers for herself and her friends, and Abe catches her. In place of juvenile hall he lets her make amends by cleaning his house and mending the coop where he keeps chickens. Abe rode bulls until injuries pushed him out, and he now trains younger riders. Kris takes an interest in the sport.
