Plot summary
It's Buddy! is a 1990s children's television series led by Buddy, an anthropomorphic orange unicorn with magical powers. Its young cast includes Freddy, Wade, Josh and Oliver, alongside Buddy's co-host Betty Bunny, the grown-up Mailman Miles and Nurse Nancy, and a set of talking objects that includes Mr. Mailbox, Strappy the Backpack and Charlie the Train. Buddy pushes Josh to take part in a dance party; Josh refuses and disappears, and Hannah arrives as his replacement. Buddy tells the others that Josh has gone to the utopian Diamond City. Freddy finds Josh's book in the trash. In the real world, Grace hires a psychic to contact a spirit that supposedly haunts her house, and a television turns on to an episode of It's Buddy!.

- Casper Kelly was approached by producers J. D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Tracy Rosenblum to make a horror film based on Barney & Friends; it grew out of his belief as a child that TV characters really lived inside their shows, and from watching Barney and Blue's Clues with his own children.
- Kelly and co-writer Jamie King built the film around themes of forced cheerfulness and the anxiety of being trapped inside a surreal media environment, expanding ideas Kelly had explored in his 2014 short film Too Many Cooks.
