Plot summary
Pete marks his thirty-first birthday at the country estate of his friend George, where the old university group has come together. George's wife Fig is there, along with Archie and Claire, Pete's former girlfriend. The friends also bring Harry, a middle-aged man they picked up in the pub, who arrives with a wild goose and behaves in ways that unsettle Pete. Pete has just come back from a refugee camp and wants to settle down with his fiancée, Sonia, who will join them the next day. As the group reminisces, Archie takes offense because Pete pretends not to recall past behavior of his that was unflattering. Pete cannot work out whether his friends mean him harm, whether he is imagining it, or whether it is all an elaborate joke.
