Plot summary

In the Alps, an eagle pair hatches two chicks, but the father eagle dies in a fight, and the weaker chick falls from the nest while its mother, needing only one heir, leaves it crying on the forest floor. Lukas, a boy whose mother Maria died in a fire, lives in the mountains with his father Keller, who has withdrawn since her death, and the two struggle to get along. Wandering the forest with his dog Scout, Lukas comes upon the fallen eaglet and carries it to the ruins of his old house to nurse it back to health. Danzer, the forester, finds out and helps, advising on food and sunlight, and Lukas reads his family's Bible, naming the bird Abel.
