Plot summary

Torrance Shipman is a senior at Rancho Carne High School in San Diego, where the Toros are chasing a sixth consecutive national cheerleading title. When their captain graduates, the squad elects Torrance to lead. A teammate is injured at the first practice of the season, and Missy Pantone, a gymnast who arrives from Los Angeles with her brother Cliff, takes her place. Missy says the Toros have been performing cheers that belong to the Clovers, an East Compton hip-hop squad, and she takes Torrance to watch them. Isis, the Clovers' captain, says the Toros' former captain taped and copied their routines, and her squad, which has never had the money to reach the championships, intends to compete against them this year.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bring It On (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • James Franco and Jason Schwartzman both auditioned to play Cliff Pantone, while Kirsten Dunst at first turned down the part of Torrance Shipman because she was not interested. Marley Shelton was the second choice but chose to star in Sugar & Spice instead.
  • Jessica Bendinger's pitch for the cheerleading film was passed over 28 times before Beacon Pictures finally took it on.
  • To keep the cheerleading realistic without stunt doubles, director Peyton Reed required every actor to attend a four-week cheerleading camp, and actors had to come to auditions with a cheer prepared.
  • The film's cultural-appropriation story grew out of Jessica Bendinger's own experience as a white writer covering hip hop artists for Spin, a predominantly white music magazine.
  • The cheerleading comedy has since been praised as an unusually early teen film to tackle systemic inequality, cultural appropriation and intersectional feminism, credited as reasons its reputation lasted.
