Gladys George
Biography
Gladys George worked as a stage and screen actress. Born in Patten, Maine, she began touring with her British actor parents at the age of three. She starred onstage in the 1920s and also made several films during that decade. Her leading performance in Valiant Is the Word for Carrie (1936) earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 9th Academy Awards. After that she mostly played supporting parts, appearing in Marie Antoinette (1938), The Roaring Twenties (1939), The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Flamingo Road (1949), and Detective Story (1951). Her Broadway credits included The Distant City, Lady in Waiting, and The Betrothal. She died in 1954.
