Plot summary
Nolan Mack has worked as a loan officer at the same bank for twenty-six years. He and his wife Joy love each other, sleep in separate rooms, and lead quiet, separate lives in a large empty house. His boss, Dan Beaumont, wants to make him bank manager, a change Nolan resists. Driving home from a visit to his father Lionel, who lies mute after a stroke, Nolan nearly hits Leo, a young man working the streets. Leo assumes Nolan is buying sex; Nolan only wants to talk with him at a motel, and he keeps arranging to see him again, lying to Joy about where he goes. His friend Winston and Joy both find him changed.

- Screenwriter Douglas Soesbe said he went through a coming out experience similar to the one in the film, coming out very late and with a great deal of guilt, though he insisted the movie is not about him.
- Soesbe's first draft was set in Los Angeles ten years earlier and he never expected it to be made because of its subject matter; once producers showed interest he moved the story to a small town he called "more constricted than Los Angeles".
