Plot summary
Millionaire Charles Deaver, disfigured in an automobile accident, funds the work of Dr. Nathaniel Leech, a scientist whose serum is meant to regrow dead cells and who hopes it will save his wife Miranda from leukemia. Leech warns that the treatment brings a ravenous hunger that only a special protein formula keeps in check. Deaver's top deputy Krendal has Leech beaten and shot, then injects him with the serum and seals him inside a tunnel system for the night without the protein. Leech eats a rat and starts to mutate. The same property holds an abandoned hospital, where Vince Stoker brings a salvage crew, including his niece Sam, in search of old equipment to sell. To reach the storage areas, the crew goes down into the tunnels.
