Plot summary
At fourteen, Christine Parker, known as Chris, has already run away from home many times. After another arrest, a court sends her to a girls' juvenile detention center. Her father beats her, which is why she keeps leaving, and her mother spends her days in a recliner with cigarettes and the television, denying what her husband does. Chris's older brother Tom knows about the beatings but has a family of his own to look after. Emma Lasko, the social worker assigned to her, never traces Chris's trouble back to her parents, and the juvenile justice system lays the blame on Chris. Counselor Barbara Clark is the one staff member who tries to reach her. Chris will not talk to her, or to anyone, about what happens at home.

- The film was blamed for the rape of a nine-year-old girl at Baker Beach, San Francisco, by some of her peers using a glass soda bottle. Her mother sued NBC for up to $11 million in damages.
- In 1981, the California Supreme Court ruled that the film was not obscene and that NBC was not liable for the actions of the people who committed the crime blamed on the film.
- Born Innocent is credited with being one of the catalysts for the National Association of Broadcasters creating a Family Viewing Hour policy the following year.
