Plot summary
In late 1972, Belfast sits in the middle of the Northern Ireland conflict. Cain Adamson, an American who has deserted from the Vietnam War, cannot board a ship home for about a week. Eight international nursing students share a house in the city while they study for their final exams; one afternoon they gather to mark Eileen's birthday, and Leila, who is pregnant, says hers comes next. Bridget, coming off a hospital shift, sees a man shot dead in the street. Cain wanders in through a kitchen door, and Amy and Leila hand him food and wine and send him on his way. Pam heads off to work a night shift at the hospital.

- The screenplay of Born for Hell is loosely based on the crimes of mass murderer Richard Speck, who killed eight nursing students in Chicago, Illinois, in 1966.
- French authorities banned Born for Hell twice, in 1976 and 1980, and the bans bankrupted the film's distributor, Filmel.
- When Born for Hell opened in the United States, feminist groups in Austin, Texas, protested its graphic violence against women, among them the Austin Rape Crisis Center, the Coalition for Battered Women, the Women's Equity Action League and Radical Lesbian Feminists.
- Actor Mathieu Carrière said that the film's producer and co-writer, Géza von Radványi, had a larger hand in directing Born for Hell than its credited director, Denis Héroux.
