Plot summary
Mildred is a bookish eleven-year-old growing up in New Zealand with her mother, and she is fascinated by the Canterbury panther, a mythical cat of the region. When a toaster explodes and leaves her mother in a coma, Mildred's father arrives from the United States to look after her. Strawn Wise, her estranged father, is an American magician, and she resents his absence from her life and finds his tricks unimpressive. He agrees to take her camping in the Canterbury Region so she can try to film the panther. A reward is offered for footage, and it would cover her mother's debts.
