Plot summary
Mary Margaret Connolly has died in the small Maine fishing town of Easter Cove, and her daughters Mary Beth and Priscilla are grieving. At the wake, Doreen Burke, Susie Gallagher, and Gail Maguire, friends of the family, offer their condolences. Mary Beth then learns that her mother borrowed money to keep the family fishmonger shop afloat, putting the house at risk, and the sisters argue. At a bar that night Mary Beth meets Gorski, a stranger, and drinks with him. She drives him home in his car, panics when he touches her leg, and crashes; the night ends in violence. She returns home to a shaken Priscilla, and together the sisters hide the body in a cooler and take it out to sea.
