Plot summary
In 1970, at a hospital in Southern California, a doctor attends three women who go into labor at the same moment; the births take place during a solar eclipse. The two boys and one girl are named Curtis Taylor, Debbie Brody and Steven Seton. Ten years afterward, a young couple, Annie Smith and Duke Benson, are killed in a cemetery by someone they never see. Sheriff James Brody, Debbie's father, brings a handle from a jump rope recovered at the scene to Miss Viola Davis's class at the elementary school and asks whether any child was there; nobody answers. Debbie and her friends Curtis and Steven ask Miss Davis to excuse the class for their birthday party, and she refuses.
