Plot summary
Max Truemont leaves prison and plans a fresh start: a diner of his own with his fiancée Roxanne. The bank refuses them a fifty-thousand-dollar loan. With no other way to raise the money, Max accepts an offer from his former partner Sydney Braverman and joins Sydney's associate Vince in the kidnapping of eight-year-old David Sandborn, whose wealthy mother lives in New England. A mysterious leader directs the job. The group takes the boy to a campsite in Maine that is shut for the winter and waits for ransom instructions. Whispers reach the kidnappers one by one and disturb their behavior.
