Plot summary
Told from Black Beauty's own point of view, the story begins with his birth as a foal in England around 1856, before Joe, a boy whose father gives the animal to him. Joe is his first owner and the one he remembers most. When the bank forecloses on the family's loan, a brutal squire takes over the farm. The horse comes into the hands of Irish Travellers, and a race and a fist fight settle which of them leads. Beauty runs away, is captured by a horse trader and sold to a circus in Spain, where he learns a set of tricks.
