Plot summary
Nigel and Fiona Dobson, a British couple, are traveling on a Mediterranean cruise ship bound for Istanbul on their way to India. In the ship's bar one night, Nigel speaks briefly with Mimi, a young French woman he has watched dancing alone. He later meets her much older American husband, Oscar, a disabled writer whose career failed. Oscar takes Nigel to his cabin and describes meeting Mimi on a bus in Paris and falling in love. Nigel repeats the account to Fiona, and both are put off by Oscar's exhibitionism, while Nigel is fascinated by Mimi, who provokes him. The Dobsons also meet Mr Singh, an Indian gentleman traveling with his young daughter Amrita.
