Plot summary
In 1942 Charlotte Gray, a young Scot who has studied in France, goes to London and takes work in a surgery. On the train Richard Cannerley questions her about her life and her fluent French, and at a book launch party he introduces her to his acquaintances. There she meets Peter Gregory, a Royal Air Force flight lieutenant, and a quick wartime romance begins. Cannerley has in fact recruited her for the Special Operations Executive, and she is seconded to the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry as a driver and completes rigorous training. When she hears that Gregory's plane came down over occupied France and he is reported missing, she volunteers for operations there, hoping to find him.
