Beyond the Lights (2014) on Netflix

Plot summary

Noni Jean grew up in London with a mother, Macy Jean, who pushed her toward performing and now manages her career. As an adult she has become a star in the United States, known for a hit collaboration with her boyfriend, the rapper Kid Culprit, and she wins a Billboard Music Award. The work leaves her feeling used more than cared for, and she nearly ends her life on a hotel balcony. A police officer, Kaz Nicol, pulls her back. Her team tells the media she slipped by mistake. Kaz has his own plans for a political career and dislikes the lie, so he keeps his distance from Noni at first. He apologizes later, and the two begin to talk; she shows him songs she wrote in secret.
