Plot summary
Sébastien is an orphan living in a village in the French Alps with César, a shepherd, and Angélina, a baker. It is 1943, and he believes his mother has traveled to America; he expects her to send him a watch with a compass as a gift. The villagers secretly arrange the passage of Jewish exiles across the border into Switzerland, while a German patrol under Lieutenant Peter Braun arrives to end the route. Sheep are found slaughtered, and the residents blame a dog that had been mistreated. Sébastien finds her, washes her, names her Belle and hides the friendship, because the village calls her a beast.
