Plot summary
Arthur Montgomery is ten years old and lives with his grandmother Daisy in a farmhouse on a dirt road in rural Connecticut. His parents are away seeking work, and his grandfather Archibald went missing not long ago. Daisy tells Arthur stories of Archibald's adventures in Africa and of the Minimoys, tiny people who now live in the garden and protect a collection of rubies. A developer named Ernest Davido gives Daisy two days to pay a large sum of money, or she and Arthur will lose the house.

- For the US release, The Weinstein Company re-edited the film as Arthur and the Invisibles, cutting about nine minutes, mostly from the love story between Arthur and Selenia because of their age difference.
- Director Luc Besson searched worldwide for Arthur, hesitating between three English and two American actors, until an outside casting director suggested Freddie Highmore after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was filmed.
- With a budget of €60 million, Arthur and the Minimoys was the most expensive French film ever produced at the time.
- In 2016 a Paris court ruled that four illustrators — Philippe Rouchier, Robert Cepo, Georges Bouchelaghem and Nicolas Fructus — were co-authors of the film, so they won a share of its profits instead of their flat fees.
- Most sets and models were installed in an old grain silo in Pantin that animation director Pierre Buffin and his BUF Compagnie team turned into a high-tech studio, where 225 people worked on animation for nearly 27 months.
- For its photorealistic look, BUF Compagnie dropped microlenses for photogrammetry, and sets were built at 1:3 scale so animators could use real plants and grass.
- Because the French animators could not handle English phonemes for lip sync, a camera was used to record the lips of Madonna and David Bowie to help the animators.
