Plot summary
White Mane leads a herd of wild horses in the Camargue, the marsh country of southern France, where the animals have never been broken. Ranchers capture the stallion and pen him in a corral, and he escapes. Folco lives with his fisherman grandfather and watches the escape, dreaming of handling the white horse himself. The ranchers try once more to take the wild stallion, and they fail again. Folco asks the men if he may have the horse, and one of them tells him he can have White Mane if he can catch him, saying it will happen when fish grow wings.

- The film's wild white stallion is based on the real Camargue horses of southeast France, small horses that have lived wild for centuries, possibly thousands of years, in the marshes of the Rhône delta, developing the stamina, hardiness and agility they are known for, and are the traditional mount of the gardians, the region's cowboys.
