Plot summary
In a small French village in March 1944, the boys of Longeverne and Velrans have kept up a long feud. Their fights are fought over buttons: any boy taken prisoner has the buttons cut from his clothes and sent home nearly naked and humiliated, and the village that gathers the most buttons wins. Lebrac, the chief of the Longeverne gang, leads his friends in this rivalry. Then he notices Violette, a young Jewish girl in the village. Local Nazi sympathizers make her presence dangerous, and the two rival gangs begin to think about setting aside their feud to keep her safe.
