Plot summary
Charlie has cycled through treatment for years. On his eighteenth birthday he walks out of a youth facility in rural Utah and hitchhikes toward Los Angeles, throwing a rock through the chapel's stained glass on the way. The driver who picks him up throws him out after finding his mother's cancer painkillers gone. At home his parents stage an intervention and offer a choice: rehab again or jail in Utah for the window. He reluctantly enters an adult program, where he meets Eva. The days hold group meetings, yoga and family visits, and the head of the outpatient house warns that recovery has to be selfish and that a romance can stand in its way. His mother gives blunt advice and support, and his father, David, a former actor running for governor, is strained with him.
