Plot summary
A monastery in Macedonia is home to Kiril, a young monk who has taken a vow of silence. He discovers an Albanian girl hiding there. Her name is Zamira, and he decides to keep her hidden from the other monks. He brings her food, and although he does not speak Albanian, he smiles when she tells him her name and calls him good. A double funeral is held near the monastery the following day, and villagers gather there. Some of them come looking for the girl. Kiril says he has not seen her.
