Plot summary
In the early 1810s, Poland has ceased to exist as a state, and the Poles and Lithuanians under Russian rule look to Napoleon, who promises to restore their homeland if they help him defeat Russia. In one district, that hope runs up against an old quarrel. Twenty years earlier, Jacek Soplica killed Count Horeszko, and the Count's warden, Gerwazy, has never stopped demanding vengeance. Judge Soplica occupies the castle, and a lawsuit over it remains unsettled. A young relative of the murdered Count, Count Horeszko, has just arrived. The Judge's nephew, Tadeusz Soplica, meets Zosia Horeszko, the teenage ward of the guardian Telimena, and a marriage between the two families is hoped for. A priest, Robak, urges the gentry to take up arms when the French cross the Nemunas River.
