Plot summary
Jessie and Mark Hobson become foster parents to eight-year-old Cody Morgan after their own son, Sean, drowns. Natalie Friedman, the social worker handling the case, tells them that Cody's mother died of cancer when he was three and that two earlier placements with foster parents did not work out. On Cody's first night in the house, he describes a nightmarish creature he calls the Canker Man. Jessie says nightmares cannot harm anyone. Later that night, butterflies appear in the living room; when Cody wakes, they are gone. Cody asks Mark about the child in a photograph, and Mark says it is Sean. That night Sean appears and the couple tries to hug him, but he vanishes when Cody wakes.
