Plot summary
An Afro-Latina born in New York, Beba carries the ancestry of a Dominican father and a Venezuelan mother who met in the city after immigrating. Her father worked his way out of poverty into the working class and moved the family of five into a one-bedroom apartment, a crowded place of strong tempers, anger and rebellion. Race is central to the story she tells about her own life, and the trauma she confronts runs through generations. She looks at the wounds relatives inflict on one another and subjects herself to the same scrutiny. Admitted to Bard College, she moves among groups separated by race and class.
