Plot summary

In Chicago, August Monroe has barely left his bedroom for eighteen months, since a shooting killed his sister Kari and left him with anxiety attacks. He makes hip-hop tracks alone and watches his best friend Laz sell drugs on the street below, and he is quiet about his feelings for Niyah. Carla, his mother, is overprotective and works every day. At the school, principal Vanessa Robinson plans to cut staff unless attendance improves, and she hires Romelo Reese, her soon-to-be ex-husband, as a security guard, asking him to get August back in class. Romelo, once a music manager, hears August's music and keeps their meetings to himself, seeing a way back into the scene and a way to hold on to Vanessa.
